“That brings up an interesting point,” he drawled dropping his arms and turning back toward the kitchen: “You didn’t quite get what you wanted. There’s no diamond in that pendant. Yet you’re acting as if this is the best of all possible worlds. Fifteen minutes ago you were waving a grapefruit knife at me and accusing me of using you as a one-night stand. Now you’re calmly dismissing me as if I were an employee for whom you no longer have any use. And what happened to the two weeks you wanted on the Merlin estate?”

Some of Lacey’s euphoria died as she was forced to acknowledge that her actions were probably more than a little mystifying. She bit her lip for a brief second as she remembered Jed saying he was fond of puzzles.

“Oh, Jed, it’s hard to explain. Let’s just say I wanted out of that relationship with or without the diamond and Rick has made it easy for me by breaking things off before we had to get too involved in this charade.”

He glanced at her over his shoulder as she automatically picked up the knife and went back to work on the grapefruit. Then be focused his attention on the eggs he was cracking into a bowl.

“Mona was right, wasn’t she?”

“About what?”

“You weren’t sleeping with him.” There was a pleased satisfaction in his voice that only an absolute idiot could have missed, Lacey realized grimly.

“It’s really none of your business, Jed,” she declared coolly. Industriously she worked on the ruby red grapefruit

“I was pretty sure you hadn’t been too heavily involved with this Clayton,” he went on as if she hadn’t spoken. “Not after the way you gave yourself to me last night. You may have grown into a somewhat arrogant, maneuvering sort of female, but in my arms last night you were completely honest with me and with .yourself. At least for a while. It gave me another little insight into the puzzle, Lacey, love, and that insight tells me you couldn’t have been too emotionally entangled with Clayton. But It was nice to have it confirmed,” be concluded blandly, tossing the eggs into the pan.

Lacey stared at his back, a mixture of dismay and outrage in her blazing hazel eyes. ‘‘Talk about arrogance! You of all people have just had proof that I don’t need to be emotionally entangled with a man in order to go to bed with him. My God! I’ve only known you for two days and… and…” She broke off furiously, aware that her words were cutting into herself much more deeply than they could possibly be cutting into him.

He swung around on his booted heel, leaving the eggs to their fate, and started toward her. “But you are emotionally involved with me, Lacey, love,” he growled, reaching for her as she instinctively backed away. He caught her shoulders and pulled her close, his eyes meeting hers on almost the same level.

“No.” Dear Lord. Why did the protest have to come
